The wolverine inhabits almost the entire forest zone of North American land and is rare throughout this territory. It is the largest member of the family of the polecat. It bears little resemblance to other animals in its appearance. The variation in length and color of fur on its pelt plays an important role in this.
Color and size
The pelts may reach 90 cm in length and 25-30 cm in width and it is difficult to mix them up not only with other kinds of fur-bearing animals, but also with their relatives.
The winter fur of the beast is thick, long, rather coarse and plump. The wool cover is loose, so it has the look of a shaggy animal. The hairs are short only on the head and legs, but in the other parts of the body they are very long, up to 120-150 mm. The down is not very thick and does not droop.
The tail is short, but very lush and due to the very long hair, reaching 250 mm, seems very thick.
Wolverines have peculiar skins, not only because of the length and lushness of their fur, but also because of their interesting coloration. Most of the muzzle is dark brown, and the forehead has a light whitish spot, sometimes with a yellowish tint. On the scruff and backbone there is a large oval spot of dark color, which is called "saddle".
Starting at the neck, two light-colored stripes run along the sides of the body and hips. Narrow and dimly pronounced in front, closer to the tail they become larger and lighter. There are often white spots of various shapes on the neck and chest.
