The beaver is one of the largest semi-aquatic animals, with very valuable fur. Its pelt area can exceed 7000 square centimetres. Its fur is tall, thick, shiny and somewhat rustic. It consists of thick, shiny, long rumpy hair, up to 5 cm in length, and soft silky down, up to 2.5 cm high. On the skull fur is much lower and denser than on the backbone and sides.

The coloration of the hair varies from almost black to light brown. An interesting fact is that even within the same area there may be families with completely different colors of fur. Hunters believe that the darker the color, the more valuable the pelt. Although it should be noted that according to the main features, there are no significant differences between them.

The beaver, like other semi-aquatic animals, molts only once a year. The molt begins in spring and ends in winter. The order of molting of different parts of the pelt in spring and autumn is the same; the only difference is that the areas of fur thin in spring and are covered with new growth in autumn. The neck and scruff are molted first, then the backbone, the sides, the scruff and the skull.
The best quality of fur is achieved in winter and early spring.
