A Beginner's Guide to Choosing Hiking Boots
Hitting the trails is one of my favourite parts of summer. Whether it's a quick afternoon hike or a full day exploring beautiful provincial parks, there's no shortage of incredible places to get outside. One of the first lessons I learned the hard way, though, was just how much of a difference the right hiking boots can make.
If you're shopping for your first pair of hiking boots or hiking shoes, all the different styles and features can feel a little overwhelming. The good news? Choosing the right hiking footwear doesn't have to be complicated. Here are three simple things to keep in mind to help you find the perfect pair for your first outdoor adventure.
Match your footwear to your adventure!
Before choosing a pair of hiking boots, think about the type of trails you'll be exploring. Smooth, well-maintained paths often call for different footwear than rocky or uneven terrain. If you're planning longer hikes or carrying a heavier backpack, you may appreciate the added stability and ankle support of a mid- or high-cut hiking boot. For casual day hikes, a lightweight hiking shoe may be all you need.

Consider the conditions
Even some moderate hiking trails can involve wet conditions, whether that's muddy paths, morning dew, or crossing shallow streams. After a good rain, even familiar hiking trails can become much wetter than expected. While breathability is often a priority for everyday footwear, many hikers choose waterproof hiking boots or shoes to help keep their feet dry and comfortable on the trail. If you don't mind the occasional wet sock, a breathable hiking shoe may be just fine, but if you're planning to tackle wetter terrain, waterproof options are well worth considering.

Prioritize comfort
You can have the most durable, waterproof hiking boots on the market, but if they aren't comfortable, you're probably not going to enjoy wearing them. When trying on hiking boots, make sure you have enough room to wiggle your toes while keeping your heel secure to help reduce rubbing and blisters.
If possible, try your boots on with the socks you plan to hike in, and don't forget to break them in before heading out on a longer adventure. Wearing them around the house or on a few shorter walks can help ensure they're comfortable before you hit the trail.
